Some thoughts I had and sketched whilst thinking about this weeks Illustration Friday word...'Teacher'. I don't necessarily agree with the saying that I wrote, or even know who wrote it, but because I hated the school system when I was a young tearaway/hooligan/anarchist....my Mum used to amuse me by saying 'He who can....does, He who can't.... teaches.'....she knew that it would be something that would make me feel good whilst putting up with another days education. The first drawing just landed on the paper like that..I think it does say something about teaching though.

This was my first rough which I was going to redraw...but I liked something about this one so I left it as it was! (As usual drawn directly onto paper with ink with no pre drawing, erasing or photoshop work...I leave the world to look at my mistakes!!)

I drew this Christmas card a few weeks ago to print and send out to a few friends and family. What always confused me as a Kid, was how the stories of Jesus and Santa Claus were separated. The ideas that everyone had a beard (apart from Mary), the Virgin Birth and the immaculate conception(s) etc etc didn't help.

I wanted to post some non cartoon sketches for a change and I whilst I thought I would have to create another blog for this, I have decided to keep everything in one place although its only cohesive in the sense that it is all artwork that I have drawn.
The top sketch is of La Iglesia de L'Orxa (L'Orxa Church). My Dad sent me some Sepia Ink from the UK and I tested it with some other browns that I had, Golden Brown By Noodler's and Sailor jentle Brown (for wash). The lower sketch is actually made up of different people I saw around L'Orxa swimming pool on one particular day of sketching...I didn't however, draw the pool!

My new fountain pens arrived yesterday and I was eager to try them out. I sat on the roadside to sketch in the next valley by a small village called Benisiva. I took my Sailor calligraphy pen with me and used it nib upside down to give me a fine line as I wasn't practised with its variation (this pen is designed to give different line widths whilst writing in Chinese). The result was a lot different from the flexible nib used in the dip pen drawing (top). I will post some work done using the Sailor's full potential soon. The following drawing of an old man (below) was done using home-made bamboo and reed pens for the lines and Copic sketch markers for the shades of grey. I cut the bamboo and reeds locally and carved the nibs into different shapes to give me varied tonal effects.
