                                                               Size: 24 x 37 cms
                                                               Media: Gouache on
                                                               Cardboard
                                                               Tools: Various brushes

Thought I'd make some art work to sell on my Etsy shop...(soon to open). This is a freehand painting that I did by eye (no tracing) on a bit of an old cardboard box. It took me quite a bit longer than I thought (7 or 8 hours probably). Painting in gouache, for the unaccustomed, is quite a task. You put some paint on and seem to lift an equal amount off. Its a balancing act...but one which you either love or hate, The good thing is that it dries quickly allowing fast(ish) production. The fact that its on cardboard means that I will let it go at a reasonable rate...It will also be cheaper to post. I'll also be printing out some of my pen work (cartoons) onto greetings cards made out of recycled brown kraft paper. I'm looking after the planet!!!..recycled everything!! If anyone is interested in buying this before the shop opens...send me an email for more details!

It is unframed and comes in the typical gouache matt finish...Varnishing ruins gouache. (its not a brilliant painting and lacks skills of good painters, but it is a Pen Mover original and will sell for a very fair price )... If it sells I'll post an edit here marking it as Sold!!!!

I am guessing that this weeks Illustration Friday theme will be Halloween based...so on Friday I'll probably link this there..(unless the word is pretty).

  1. Nice man, Mr. Frankenstein. He was my uncle , living near by Artichokistan. U captured him very well. He would like it, too. Already sold?

    2. Yes, I've heard that Mr. Frankenstein was very nice, but Frankenstein's Monster was not so. He had an abnormal brain, I hear.

  2. Hey. me dió miedo!!!!

  3. Cool. And it's good ol' Boris, not Glen Strange of the later Frankenstein movies. Not only have you captured his likeness but I can also see that you were the artist; your style is clearly showing through.

Gouache is fun to paint with, but very delicate. Supposedly it's considered the purest paint because of the finely ground pigment and very little vehicle/binder used in it. That's why it's so fragile. Interesting that you would use the lowly cardboard as a surface for the the richest paint. Irony!

    1. Haha thanks Ted...It was me alight!! The cardboard is sort of an Arte povera thing. I was always asked at Art school was my work Arte Povera...No I said I was just skint!

  4. But this is a real pretty Frankenstein! His sad accepting look is so touching! Or is it the paint that makes him so soft? I like the card board edges! Great plan, your shop!

    1. I softened the corners of his mouth like Leonardo did with Mona Lisa...It obscures any definite emotion apparently and casts a spell of ambiguity across the work....it was either that or my bad interpretation...I'll go with the first!
