IF Whiskers
Size: 20 x 22 cms
Media: Tattoo Ink on Pigskin
Pens: Tattoo machines
I like to throw in something different now and again. There is a financial crisis in Spain and some of you may be aware that for the past two months I have been trying to teach myself how to tattoo as it is difficult to survive solely on the illustrations that I do and I need some regular income from somewhere else...still illustration, but on skin...with needles.
Its probably the most difficult medium that I have used to date and I have full respect for all tattooists.....when a mistake is made, it stays. I obviously cannot practise on human skin.It is fairly common amongst tattoo 'apprentices/wannabes' to use pigskin as this is physically quite close to human skin. What does this have to do with whiskers? Well some pigskin is hairy...this bit was and I had to shave it prior to tattooing it...otherwise Al Capone would have had whiskers.

THIS IS A TATTOO!!! Well rattatattoeeetooo! You are a fabulous inker. OMG! This is like a photograph!!! Yes, some distrurbing news from Spain including the fact that Catalonia wants to be independent. Wow, you really are an amazing tattoo artist. I hate needles! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ces...Good thing about pigskin...it doesn't scream or bleed...or complain!
DeleteThis is very good, and completely different from your blog style...
ReplyDelete(not to disparage your blog work at all)
Will Gerard make it onto a deltoid or two?
.
Thanks Richard...Yes its a lot different...I'm trying to remind myself how to copy from life as I know that portraits are quite popular amongst tattoo clients....most of the drawing I do on here is deliberately drawn without reference and without being refined..
DeleteIf someone wants a Gerard on their deltoid...I would probably oblige!
DeleteWhen I wrote copying from life..I meant copying from a reference (photo)..Obviously I didn't see Capone..."err hang on Al..don't move...Ok you can move if you want...no its not, its pigs skin..just hold it there...please...."
Deleteit is ...indeed very different. Your Al Capone looks good even on pig skin but I guess it would look good on every medium .....
ReplyDeletetattooing on pigskin is like running with weights on your ankles..when I draw on paper now...it seems easier. The skin tends to slip, wrinkle, wobble and smell...on top of that..it has to be stretched whilst tattooing..the machines have an infinite number of variable settings, needle groups, springs, voltages..requiring certain new hand movements/drawing techniques...and sometimes shaving...the disappointing thing is throwing the artwork in the bin when its finished.

Delete(not necessarily: read the story by R.Dahl) ;)
'Skin'...I just read a plot review..I'll have to read it thanks!
DeleteHey, amigo, casi yo he vuelto a la normalidad!
ReplyDeleteMi esposa y yo estamos próximos a hacernos un tatuaje...pero viajar a España será demaciado expensive, lo lamento!!! muy bueno tu arte!!!
(gracias por tu comentario solidario)
Gracias Hombre!!
DeleteNice looking tat, if tat's your thing.
ReplyDeleteBut Gerard would make a wonderful tramp-stamp on some fine lady's lower backside. Give him those angel wings with a bleeding heart backdrop. Maybe some barbwire flourishes. Pigskin it first for our enjoyment here.
I'll do that Ted! )I can tell...tats not your thing!)
DeleteYou are right...a tattoo artists is a scarey occupation but this is very impressive! I have to agree with the others too...Gerard would make a very amusing tattoo!!
ReplyDeleteI'll do Gerard on someone for free!! Just come to Spain and its yours! I need to practise on someone...Come on...its only on there for the rest of your life!
DeleteThanks Claire!
Whoo - there's a leap! Rather humorous that your Capone had to be shaved just this once, while the other had to shave every day to avoid whiskers. Possibly more than once a day... Excellent work. When you start working on live canvases, will be very interesting. Of course, my mind jumped to the possibility of you practicing on live pigs - sedated? And what a herd would look like after you had finished with them. Very amusing. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHere via Illustration Friday--I thought this was a photograph, so you're doing well in your practice of becoming a tattoo artist. I really like your style. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteUmmm....that's NOT a photo? You just blew me away!!! (although not in the same way Al Capone would do it....) Really impressive!!! (And I learned something about pig hair today too!)
ReplyDeleteGreat looking tattoo! Love the shades, I didn't know that this is possible with tattoo techniques, this is a way better looking than most tattoos I have seen. You have graduated!
ReplyDeleteBloody hell.... That's amaaaaaazing man.
ReplyDeleteIf you wanna change to human skin to test your wicked skills, I'd be MORE than happy to volunteer!!!! ;) ...Can you do Prince? :) haha :D
